Observation
When downloading file recordings from my Videon device, I noticed that the recordings resulted in several small files rather than one large file like I anticipated.
Explanation
The Videon software creates a “pipeline” to channel audio and video from input to output. Many things can “break” this pipeline. Once the pipeline is broken the file recording will stop. When the pipeline is reinstated, the file recording will continue, but with a new file.
Things that can “break” the pipeline:
- Lost connection to ingest server
- This can occur with a faulty internet connection, or an interruption in service
- The user changed something in the configuration
- You can change the bitrate “on the fly” while streaming but most other changes will stop and restart the pipeline
- The input format changes
- User switches inputs
- From HDMI to SDI
- From SDI to HDMI
- Poor quality input or bad cable
- The software keeps detecting and then losing detection of audio or video
- 4GB file size “chunks” due to FAT32 limitation
